The Power is in the Cloud

Getting Started with IBM Power Virtual Cloud Solutions

The Power is in the Cloud

Disaster Recovery for critical applications is an important part of any Business Continuity Plan. Most, if not all IBM Power servers, host mission-critical applications and the need for a standby server at a secondary location is essential for an effective disaster recovery plan. With the introduction of cloud-based POWER servers it has become much easier and more cost effective to have a standby server at a remote location. The customer does not need to purchase a server with idle capacity and host it in a remote datacenter to achieve their DR goals.

Proposed Solution
In order to provide a standby server at a remote location, customers can take advantage of IBM’s Power Systems Virtual Servers. The process is highly scalable and budget-friendly.

Here's how it works:

These virtual servers are co-located and connected with the IBM Cloud and are the exact same hardware you would use for your on-premise workloads. The difference is that you do not have to make an upfront purchase of all the capacity required to host your DR environment.

The virtual server can be sized to the minimum resources required to support any data replication, which reduces the monthly cost of maintaining the standby server - hence the cost-effective component. When the standby server needs to become the active server, it can be quickly resized to the full amount of CPU and memory used by the primary server. Once the workload is transferred back to the primary server, the standby server can go back to its minimal size.

Say Goodbye to Downtime
Another benefit of using cloud based virtual servers is that you do not have to worry about hardware refresh cycles anymore. As new generations of hardware are introduced, the virtual servers can be migrated with little or no downtime. If software is kept current, there will be no issues with moving to the new systems. Also, customers do not have to deal with the mountains of old hardware to dispose of as the new technology replaces old.

We Are Here to Help
What if you don’t have any experience with cloud-based virtual servers? That’s where Sentia can help. We have long-standing expertise in cloud-based virtual solutions and can help with the deployment and implementation of the POWER virtual server on your behalf.
